Daily Devotional for September 14
September 14 Matthew 2:13-23
"And Joseph rose and took the child and his mother by
night, and departed to Egypt... ."
Picture yourself as Joseph. In a dream an angel tells you to
get up and escape to Egypt. You wake up. The bed is comfort-
able. The last thing you want to do is wake up your spouse,
pack all your belongings, and head for the Nile. Wouldn't you
want to rollover and go back to sleep, saying "It can wait
until tomorrow"?
Sometimes we pray for God's call in our lives, and when it
comes we say, "Not now, maybe later." Or we say, "Not now,
wait until I'm perfect."
Joseph got up by night and took Mary and the child Jesus to
Egypt. He didn't wait until morning to see if the weather would
be good for travel; he didn't wait to see if what the angel told
him was actually true; he didn't waste time analyzing and re-
analyzing the message. He went, and the child's life was saved.
The call of God can be exhilirating - and frightening.
Sometimes when God leads us in new directions, we become
confused, uncertain, even angry. At such times, we may be
tempted to ignore the messages God sends us. The example
Jesus teaches is that the only way we can save our lives is by
discovering what God wants for us.
Take time today to discern where God may be calling you.
Make sure to listen during your prayer time today.
