Daily Devotional for March 4

March 4                                                             John 8:47-59

               Hearing the Words of God

Jesus says in today's Scripture, "The one who is of God hears
the words of God." The concept of hearing God is a strange
one in our society, but people who follow God can hear the
voice of God in a variety of ways.

First, we can obtain guidance for our daily living through
reading the Bible. Second, we can hear God's will through the
advice of men and women of faith. Third, we can hear God's
voice through the community of faith, the church. We can
also find direction through knocking on various doors and go-
ing through the open ones, through "words of knowledge"
from friends, or even directly, as the still, small voice of our
inner consciousness directs us or speaks encouragement.

It is the promise of Jesus that we can hear God's voice if we
are of God. The problem may be that too few of us have been
listening: we may have been taught not to expect to hear God's
voice, or that we are "crazy" if we claim to hear it. Even a
cursory reading of the literature of faith reveals, however, that
these are only a few of the means of hearing God's voice. We
can and ought to expect to hear the voice of God, who wants
to provide guidance for us in even the mundane things of life.
We need but listen.

Loving and Guiding Presence, open me today to hear
your voice. Like a child learning to listen to the voice of
its parents, let me learn to listen to your words to me.
I pray in Jesus' name.  Amen.
