Daily Devotional for February 21

February 21                                                        John 4:43-54

"Jesus said to him, 'Go; your son will live.' "

With a word, Jesus brings healing to the dying son of the man
who pleads for Jesus to come and heal his son. Healing comes
because the man believes the word Christ speaks. Jesus never
goes to the boy's bedside. However, Jesus does say, "Unless
you see signs and wonders you will not believe." Then he gives
the signs and wonders.

Modern people of faith are like the man who pleaded with
Jesus. We too seek signs and wonders. We want life to really
change for us and those we love. I believe God still gives what
is needed for belief. Lives are changed; physical healing does
occur. But perhaps the most wonderful miracle of all is that
people still take Jesus at his word. Like the father in the story,
they return to their lives and their homes expecting the
promise of Jesus to be real.

Belief comes through hearing. Christ's word speaks out of the
Gospel and into our hearts. We can go about our life expecting
Christ's word to be fulfilled for us and in us. Like the man
who returned home to find his son healed, we too return to
our daily lives after an encounter with Christ, in the Word
or in the Eucharist, to discover that Christ has gone before
us to make things new. Life has changed. There are signs and
wonders God gives to our lives. Those who have eyes to see
will see.

Yes, Jesus, I really do believe. I have kept my faith
hidden like a secret. But I really do expect your promise
to be real for me. Now I want to get up and go about
life seeing your signs and wonders.
