Daily Devotional for June 24
June 24 Luke 21:20-28
"And then they will see the Human One
coming in a cloud with power and great glory."
Christ will come again. Jesus will indeed appear in a cloud.
But until he does, our eyes need to focus on this earth, not
on the clouds above it. If we spend our lives waiting for a deus
ex machina to deliver us, we may miss the "power and great
glory" of Jesus that is ours to share today, right here, even
before our eyes reach the end of this sentence. For it is only
by being fully present to the moment that we can experience
eternity in time.
Jesus reminds us in the Sermon on the Mount: "And which
of you by being anxious can add one cubit to your span of
life?... Therefore, do not be anxious about tomorrow, for
tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Let the day's own trouble
be sufficient for the day." (Matthew 6:27, 34)
Jesus' message is clear: Live in the here and now. Yesterday
is no more. Tomorrow is yet to come. Live today. We are given
the power and great glory of Jesus to live each day as it comes.
As surely as Christ died, Christ rose; and as surely as Christ
rose, Christ will come again in a cloud with power and great
glory. But this power and great glory is ours to embrace today
as we focus on the presence of Christ among us here and now
and carry the message of love to our brothers and sisters
throughout the world.
Jesus, teach me to live with you in the present
moment, so that I may receive the eternal life you offer,
both now and when you come again to call me home.
