Daily Devotional for April 5
April 5 John 17:20-26
Essence
I knew my grandmother, loved her,
Not because I'd met her (though I had),
But from the stillness of my
Mother's warm and fragrant
Breast.
The locket with Grandmother's picture
Waited there, warm and young and
Smelling of perfume,
For me (delighted) to find and open
As I sat in Mother's lap.
I rocked, remembered with her
Another mother's
Comforting embrace.
Dear Creator,
We come to know you not because we "meet" you (though
we have met you), but because we see in others your reflec-
tion: Please remind me from time to time that knowing Jesus,
or knowing your earnest followers, is my best chance of know-
ing you myself. While I am free to approach you on my own,
you have given me pieces of yourself through every person
in my acquaintance. To know them is to know you, and to
know you is to live.
