Daily Devotional for May 20
May 20 Luke 12:49-59
Jesus, we have been told that you are the prince of peace. When
you were born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod
the king, angels sang glory to God in the highest, and on earth
peace among all. We thought you preached nonviolence,
peace, and justice for all people of earth. And now you tell
us not to suppose that you have come to bring peace on earth,
but rather that you have come to bring division and dissen-
sions in the family. Father and son, mother and daughter shall
be divided against one another. The family shall be torn
asunder. Jesus, we do not understand.
My children, you are not bound by an old morality
that withholds my love from those who cannot meet
its liberating demands. I have called you to freedom.
I have called you to a new way. My way offers love
to all. Only my love can heal the wounds that have
condemned the sinner and the outcast to a lesser
place. The community of the so-called righteous
resists my love because I seek out the lost and offer
them healing and restoration into a new wholeness
that cannot be known by those who refuse to suffer.
So I do bring division and dissension to a world
bound in a decaying ethic that enforces the rights
of the privileged over justice for the little ones who
call upon my name. Those who follow my Gospel
will turn the world upside down. They shall come
before authorities in my name. The world will hate
them. Their families will reject them. But my little
ones need not fear, for I have chosen them to enter
into my realm. They shall rest in my peace.
