Daily Devotional for August 28

August 28                                                       Mark 13:14-27

Jesus foretells that one day the world will fall apart and that
when that happens, you will find yourself in deep distress.

What can you do about it? You yourself will not be able to
deal with the situation, and you may well be tempted to follow
those in your midst who claim power and authority even
though you know that they may be "false Christs and false
prophets." Jesus warns you to watch out for them and to pay
attention instead to Jesus, who promises that at that terrible
time Christ will return "in clouds with great power and glory,"
and angels will gather you and all God's people "from the four
winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven."

As you meditate today, allow yourself to feel for a few minutes
the unsettling certainty that the world as you know it will come
to an end. Open yourself to the knowledge that your sense
of control over life is an illusion.

And now, focus on the poetry of the biblical verses and let
them come alive for you. Can you see Christ coming on the
clouds? Do you hear the sound of angels, feel their gentle
touch? Know deep in your heart that when your world is com-
ing to an end and you are in deep distress, God is there with
you, gathering you in gentle, loving, almighty arms.
